ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will own the technical direction and execution of the EFEX platform's backend systems. But this is not a traditional Staff Engineer role.

We believe we are at an inflection point in software development. AI-powered tools — from code generation and automated testing to AI-assisted debugging, code review, and architecture design — are fundamentally changing what a small, focused engineering team can accomplish. We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer who doesn't just "use AI" but who helps build an AI-Primero engineering culture from the ground up, treating AI tools as a core multiplier of speed, quality, and output across

the team.

You will serve as a key technical referent, translating architecture and product goals into scalable, secure, and reliable backend systems — while helping ensure that every engineer at EFEX operates at 5–10x the productivity of a traditional developer by deeply integrating AI into their daily workflows.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role. We need someone who can architect backend systems, mentor engineers, and make critical build-vs-buy decisions — while also collaborating closely with product and executive stakeholders to articulate technical trade-offs and communicate our platform's technical strengths.

QUALIFICATIONS

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, with 4+ years focused on backend systems at a senior or staff level (Staff Engineer, Senior Engineer, Tech Lead, or equivalent).
• Experience in fintech, banking, or payments — with an understanding of regulatory and compliance landscapes.
• Demonstrated, hands-on experience using AI development tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar) in production workflows — not just experimentation. You should be able to articulate exactly how AI tools changed your team's velocity and output, with concrete examples.
• Experience building internal AI/LLM-powered tools or integrating AI into backend services and product features.
• Track record of championing AI-driven development workflows within an engineering team and measuring the results.
• Deep hands-on experience with Python and Django in production environments at scale.
• Familiarity with frontend technologies such as React.js is a plus, but the primary focus is backend systems.
• Proven experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, data modeling, and data pipeline design.
• Track record of building and operating high-availability backend services serving a large number of users.
• Experience mentoring engineers, driving technical standards, and raising the bar across a team — without necessarily carrying formal management responsibilities.
• Deep understanding of API design, microservices architecture, event-driven architecture, and system integration patterns.
• Strong expertise in cloud security for fintech — including secure architecture design, encryption at rest and in transit, secrets management, SOC 2 compliance, PCI-DSS standards, penetration testing, and zero-trust security models appropriate for handling sensitive financial data and transactions.
• Deep knowledge of AWS and multi-cloud environments — including compute, networking, storage, IAM, and managed services. Experience designing resilient, cost-efficient cloud architectures.
